Introduction to Space Health

Travelling can be tough on health, especially in outer space! There are many health problems that astronauts face while on their missions. They have the basic needs of food, water, shelter and normal temperatures. They also have extra health problems that come from being in space including radiation exposure, psychological stress and the physical effects of zero gravity. If humans want to colonize the Moon, Mars and the International Space Station, these health problems need more research. Technology is advancing everyday and scientists are coming up with innovative and possible solutions to these space health conditions. Space Health covers a large area and the opportunities for the future of Astronaut health are huge. We will focus on only 4 of these issues.

Shown here is an astronaut displaying zero gravity. Although this looks like fun, space can really be harmful to your health!

This specialty consists of the four parts listed below:

Module 1: Space nutrition
Module 2: Mental health in space
Module 3: Zero gravity and health
Module 4: Radiation and health in space

Your team role is that of medical specialist. During the parts that you will be working on you will gain a lot of knowledge on space health. You should keep in mind that what you are learning should also be used in the assignment for the final team project. Talk with your team members from the start of this project to agree what you will be creating for the final group project.
